Haruka

A Once-in-a-Lifetime Art

Sasebo, Nagasaki Prefecture. In a city nestled between sea and mountains, a young girl picked up a brush for the first time at the age of four. What began at the tip of that small brush would, in time, become her life's work.

Haruka is a calligrapher now based in Tokyo, where she creates original works, teaches calligraphy — including at the high school level — and shares the art with a wider audience through social media.

Calligraphy, or shodō, is a tradition that has been passed down in Japan for more than a thousand years. On the surface, it may seem like simply writing characters. But within every stroke are the breath, focus, emotion, and lived experience of the person holding the brush.

Write the same character — say, 幸, “happiness” — today, and it will be different from the one you wrote yesterday. Even the same person, writing the same character, can never create exactly the same work twice.

This is what makes calligraphy an art of ichigo ichie — a single, unrepeatable encounter.

Where Tradition Meets the Digital

For Haruka, studying the classics is essential. Mastering the lines, the negative space, and the brushwork refined over centuries gives her the foundation for everything new she creates.

From that foundation comes her avant-garde work. She draws out the gradations of ink, the way it bleeds and fades into dry, textured strokes, sometimes bringing in acrylic paint as well — pushing her practice beyond the writing of characters into a freer form of expression.

At the same time, on Instagram and YouTube, she shares videos of her brush moving across the paper, capturing the process of a piece coming into being, stroke by stroke.
