Sasebo, Nagasaki Prefecture. In a city nestled between sea and mountains, a young girl picked up a brush for the first time at the age of four. What began at the tip of that small brush would, in time, become her life's work.

Haruka is a calligrapher now based in Tokyo, where she creates original works, teaches calligraphy — including at the high school level — and shares the art with a wider audience through social media.

Calligraphy, or shodō, is a tradition that has been passed down in Japan for more than a thousand years. On the surface, it may seem like simply writing characters. But within every stroke are the breath, focus, emotion, and lived experience of the person holding the brush.

Write the same character — say, 幸, “happiness” — today, and it will be different from the one you wrote yesterday. Even the same person, writing the same character, can never create exactly the same work twice.

This is what makes calligraphy an art of ichigo ichie — a single, unrepeatable encounter.
